What is a Character Study — Character vs. Plot-Driven Narratives
H ave you ever watched a movie that seemed more focused on the inner life of its central character than following a traditional plot? Plenty of movies have great characters, but how many of those same movies would have the same plot if you removed that character? This is part of what makes character studies special, as these are films whose whole premise is based around the main protagonist — their trials, struggles, hopes, and dreams. So what is a character study and how do you know when you’re watching one?

How do we define character study?
We will start by saying that “character study” also refers to when you write an essay about a character. In this article, we are of course not talking about that, but instead the character study definition in film. Characters arcs, a character’s wants and needs, and the things that make them who they are the things that make up a character study.

What is a character study?
A character study is when a movie is driven more by the internal struggles of one or more main characters rather than an external plot. This is different from plot-driven narratives where the movie is mainly about achieving an external goal (winning the boxing match, saving the world, etc.). With a character study, the main narrative is almost exclusively driven by the character(s), which includes their motivations and feelings.

Plenty of classic films in Hollywood have focused their attention on the characters and not so much the plot around them. Some of them act like biopics while others narrow their focus to very specific times and places.
Citizen Kane (1941) is one of Orson Welles’ best movies, and it happens to be a character study. Chronicling the life of Charles Foster Kane (played by Welles himself), the movie uses anecdotes and information from others to create a portrait of an important and powerful man who, even with all his power, still yearned for simpler and more easy-going days.
Acclaimed for its narrative, especially its non-linear structure, the film is also famous for the film techniques Welles used, proving to be massively influential in all cinematic fronts.

Taxi Driver (1975), one of Martin Scorsese’s best movies, is another classic character study, with a plot that is entirely reliant on Travis Bickle (Robert De Niro). Using narration, we get insight into Travis, how he thinks, what his motivations might be, and why he does what he does. De Niro’s performance is vital, as he brings to life a horribly troubled and psychotic human being who is, ultimately, a reflection of ourselves.

Using StudioBinder’s screenwriting software, we can read the script for Taxi Driver — written by famed writer and director Paul Schrader — which gives us plenty of examples of Bickle, his mental state, and the way he sees the world.

One of the most popular and successful movies of all-time is also a character study: The Breakfast Club. Technically a multi-character study, this movie completely eschewed a regular plot in order to focus on the five kids who have Saturday detention in 1984.
While the characters initially see one another one-dimensionally, the lack of a central plot allows us to dig into their emotions, perceptions, and viewpoints. You can read our script analysis on The Breakfast Club, where we go over the dialogue, characters, and its impactful ending.

Another one of the best ‘80s movies of all-time is Spike Lee’s Do the Right Thing, which follows a similar path of spreading its plot by following a series of characters over the course of a single day.
In contrast to The Breakfast Club, Do the Right Thing focuses on a multicultural Brooklyn neighborhood block, which is full of heated relationships and open prejudice among whites, blacks, Asians, and Latinos.

As some of our classic examples showed, and as some of the recent examples below will demonstrate, character studies can be varied in their genre and approach. Some follow a familiar enough path and are more obvious while others hide their character study intentions more subtly.
One of the best Coen Brothers movies is Inside Llewyn Davis (2013), which focuses on a few days in the life of a struggling musician. Featuring a quality soundtrack and cast of characters, the main focus is on Llewyn, who goes from place to place and upsets almost everyone he comes across.
The Coens present Llewyn as an almost mythical figure, someone with so much talent but fails at every turn. The video below by DysnomiaFilms goes into how the Coens managed to use Llewyn as a representation of the entire 1960s New York folk scene, and how that combination also represents depression.

10 декабря в RealTime School состоялся мастер-класс VFX-artist студии BASELEVS Владимира Забелина. В течение двух часов он рассказывал о профессии технического директора по персонажам (Character TD), делился опытом студийной работы и рассказал об одной из наиболее сложной и интересной части производственного процесса — риге персонажей и механизмов.
Коротко о том, что же рассказал специалист широкого профиля в области компьютерной графики и анимации, прошедший путь от моделлера и аниматора до технического директора и супервайзера по сетапу персонажей и визуальным эффектам – читайте ниже.
Работа над проектом. С чего начать?
Итак, работа над проектом состоит из нескольких стадий:
• Непосредственно задумка модели
• Работа художников, которые рисуют скетчи
• Работа моделлеров, которые создают модель
• Раскрашивание «в нечеловеческие цвета радуги» модели художниками и текстурировщиками
• Анимация модели аниматорами
• Специально обученные люди «вот с такими головами, которые понимают разные языки программирования или шейдинг лэнгвича» шейдят и рендерят модель
• Фантастические люди все это композят
• В эфире красивая вещь! =)
В этой цепочке не прозвучало ни слова о риге и сетапе. Возникает вопрос – где же место профессии технического директора по персонажам в этом производственном процессе?
Оказывается между моделлером и аниматором и находится тот самый «междумордник», тот самый интерфейс, который называют сетапером / риггером / техническим директором по персонажам / Character TD, без которого не получится никакой анимации, никакого фильма.
А все потому, что моделлеры умеют замечательно моделить, аниматоры прекрасно анимируют. Но! Модель, которую вы все прекрасно понимаете, проанимировать, двигая вершины, не представляется никакой возможности.
Значит, должен появиться тот человек, который приведет модель, которую прекрасно сделал моделлер, в состояние, при котором ее можно будет анимировать. И все это для того, чтобы аниматор, как профессионал, который умеет красиво, правильно и экспрессивно двигать модели, смог заниматься своей работой, а не чесать себе репу – какой же объект нужно выбрать, за какой же квиточек нужно потянуть, чтобы получить результат. Все это он должен получить от того самого «междумордника», того самого сетапера, который и подготовит ему модель для анимации.
Вернемся к вопросу мастер-класса – Как стать Character TD, которого любят аниматоры? Ответ – никак=) Такого не бывает. Но, тем не менее, стремиться к этой анимационной любви можно, если учиться сетапу, анимации, компьютерной графики. Как ни странно, сетаперы – не так часто встречающиеся люди на ниве компьютерной графики. Их не очень много, но как заверил Забелин, вакансий при этом полно.
Сами по себе термины «сетап» и «риг» сейчас имеют практически одинаковые значения. Владимир эти два термина различает, просто потому что термин «риг» появился немножечко позже, чем термин «сетап». Пока этого термина не было, на своих курсах и везде, где это было уместно, он говорил, что нужно готовую модель подготовить к использованию – провести сетап модели, сетап сцены. Сетап – это подготовка модели / локации, или чего бы там еще ни было, к работе, к анимации.
Риг – это оснастка. Термин риг пришел из кораблестроения (кстати, много чего в компьютерной графике и математике пришло из судостроения). Риг – это оснастка судна. Все эти реи, веревки, шкоты, брасы – это все на самом деле риг. Т.е. мы, как настоящие корабелы, должны оснастить нашу модель управляющими контрольными элементами, заставить ее правильно работать, с тем, чтобы аниматор смог выполнить свою работу. Кстати, сетапер – это еще и тот человек, который должен оптимизировать свою и чужую работу.
Более того, риг и сетап, как поле для деятельности, не ограничивается только какими-то моделями. Риг и сетап часто могут быть удобны для разного рода динамических симуляций. Деятельность по ригу и сетапу превращается не только в так называемую инженерную деятельность, но и немного в исследовательскую, творческую. Происходит не просто забивание гвоздей, но и некое осмысление действительности, как это должно все работать.
Во время мастер-класса на примере персонажей из проекта «Алиса знает, что делать», Владимир Забелин рассказал о разнообразных моделях, которые в ходе работы над проектом он разделил на несколько видов.
Началось все со стандартных человекообразных персонажей. Доступно и понятно Владимир рассказал о контрольных элементах, за которые нужно схватиться аниматору для того, чтобы что-нибудь подвигать, о том, что находится внутри – кости, сплайны и т.д.
«Была сцена с огромной толпой мальчиков и девочек, которых нужно было сделать очень быстро. Сетапить стандартных персонажей легко, потому что есть определенные технологии, готовые скелеты, Advanced Skeleton или которые делал Михаил Бажуткин и еще целый ряд авторигов.
Человекообразные персонажи сетапятся одинаково. Например, сцена заседания с толпой людей – каждый что-то делал – кивал, одабривал и др., но не было смысла каждого персонажа отдельно сетапить. Поэтому взяли одного, засетапили, остальных переодели, где-то поменяли головы, где-то добавили усы, наоборот убрали, оставляли какое-то количество зон, важных с точки зрения сетапа. В среднем один персонаж сетапится неделю, а тут десять персонажей сетапили за 3 дня.
Бывают персонажи второстепенной важности, от которых нужно что-то одно – например, муха, которая летает где-то в углу. Конечно, подготавливать ее с движением усиков, носиков полностью, если она будет где-то в углу размером с 3 пикселя, нет никакого смысла. Тем не менее, каких-то действий от нее аниматору нужно добиться. Значит, этот персонаж с какой то упрощенной деятельностью должен пройти через сетапера.
Но не все персонажи стандартные, бывают с какими-то расширенными, усложненными ситуациями. Вдруг появляются какие-то хвосты, которые должны что-то делать, или большие руки-ноги, рога, три глаза, 45 бород. Тогда риггер дорабатывает свои стандартные наработки, доделывает под конкретную задачу.
Физические законы, которые встречаются в нашей жизни на каждом шагу, и о которых мы никогда не задумываемся, в Autodesk Maya отсутствуют. Для того чтобы законы движения различных механизмов и конструкций реализовать в Maya, приходится открывать законы, выявлять закономерности, по которым движутся составные части объекта, зависимость объектов, деталей друг от друга в зависимости от движения.
Определенные сложности появляются при работе с роботами, бытовыми приборами.
Одна из самых сложных задач у сетапера связана с крыльями. Беда в том, что в крыле очень много перьев, каждое из которых должно взаимодействовать друг с другом и составлять общую картинку.
На мастер-классе подробно разбирались конкретные персонажи и решались определенные задачи, с которыми сталкивается современный сетапер. Всего и не напишешь=)
Скоро состоится курс Владимира Забелина про риг и сетап в Autodesk Maya, где он попытается научить базовым вещам, чтобы желающие могли хотя бы понять, в каком направлении нужно двигаться. «Буду читать то, что знаю и умею с точки зрения моего понимания того, что должен знать сетапер, который будет работать в нашей стране».
