Многие отраслевые группы использовались для академических исследований при рассмотрении фирм, оказывающих профессиональные услуги, что затрудняет получение четкого определения. Некоторая работа была направлена на более точное определение фирм по оказанию профессиональных услуг (PSF). В частности, Фон Норденфлихт создал таксономию фирм по оказанию профессиональных услуг, выделив четыре типа: [3]
Такие рамки, как эта, помогают менеджерам и ученым лучше понимать, как такие фирмы управляют собой и как оценивать эталонные практики.
