Что такое foil badges
I know that this question is a bit rhetorical given that normal cards themselves don’t do much either, but after completing my first foil set I’m really not seeing the point in collecting them.
The experience you get for completing a foil set is laughable, especially when the cost and ammount of cards required to make up a foil set can greatly exceed the cost of simply upgrading the normal set to a higher level. It doesn’t seem that there’s much of a difference in your chances of items from a foil badge craft either (in my case, I received literally the exact same profile, emoticon, and summer card as I had with the original badge). You could say that it still has some value purely in the bragging rights, but even in this scenario the foil badges do not actually identify themselves as foil unless you know the games badges in question or look at the badge within the showcase/badge areas of a persons profile.
I’m not really complaining, but I do think it’s odd that foils are set up to be even more pointless than regular cards right now. Valve as a company would most likely want to keep foils at a valuable status, as the market transactions for them net them in some profit for both themselves and other developers. Is there something more I’m missing to foils that is in the works?

Well yes, and the additional function you get from an unusual hat in TF2 is laughable compared to the extra cost. But people buy them anyway.
You have it right; the rarity is the point, same as has always been the case with foil (physical) cards.
its more about e-penis. IMO they need to make it more worth while to keep the foils instead of selling them instantly.
The point? It is to make something ‘rare’ so it can go on the community market place and make Valve lots of money. You could just as well ask what is the point of Badges or Levels all together. After all most of what they do is purely cosmetic except, to my knowledge, larger friends lists.
Cards are just a way for Valve to make money out of nothing. Its a classic marketing trick, as Pokemon said «gotta’ catch ’em all» and it works. Rare badges just feed into that desire to get a complete set, or to one up your friends. Exactly the same as Platinum trophies on PSN or the XBL equivalent, except they cost money.

This is a tangent, but I’d be interested to see how much money Valve makes overall on rare/high-priced items compared to cheaper ones. As I see it, the fees minimise at one cent (in my currency), so for three-cent sales (the cheapest possible), Valve’s cut is actually 33%, which is an awful lot higher than the cut they get on expensive items. They’ll be getting an increased percentage of the cut on anything priced below what, twenty cents (5% = 1c)? Which seems to be most cards at the moment. So it may be that they really don’t have that much incentive to keep the prices high.

So would I. I have considered writing an API to track price and volume of sales better than their graph, so I might look into it a bit more.
I know that a large appeal to the system is to provide developers and the steam platform a new source of income, that much is obvious by the way that card sets are handled (half given, half traded/bought). What I don’t understand is why the reward they put on obtaining foil sets is worse than the value of normal sets which net them less profit. Surely they would rather have me buy a set of 10 cards at 1-4 dollars per than spend a tiny fraction of that upgrading a normal badge to the point where its reward is greater than a foil sets.
Valve has a trained economist they pay serious money to keep around. You can bet they have all this figured out.

I personally believe, that it would be much better, if those foilbadges would give you about 500XP instead of 100. It is so hard to gather them and now, that I finally crafted one, I got 100XP and thats it. Wow.
What do you think? Are those superhypermegabadges that awesome at the moment or is there something you would change about them?
Yep. You can basically either spend 25-50p completing a level set for 100XP or you could spend £3+ on a foil set for 100XP also. It’s daft and purely for the collector enthusiasts. I sold my Skyrim foil for 75p a few months back and in return I managed to complete the entire level 5 set with loose change left over.
The whole badge concept and levelling is flawed IMO anyway. I spent £70 on games earlier on this year and earned a measley 3XP for my troubles but alternatively I could have spend 70p and earned 100XP for my efforts. It seems Steam’s idea of profile investment surrounds badges more than games themselves. Someone who doesn’t collect badges could have 1000 games and still be only a level 10 yet someone who owns 10 games and has completed each level 5 badge could be a superior level despite spending £20,000 less!
I personaly guess, that the entire system is just a giant concept of collecting money. You see: They take 10% fee with every item sold. And how many objects are sold every day on the community-market? A lot 😉 And that is a lot of money!
You see these holiday cards right now: There are about 3500 Cards being sold every hour. And there are 10 cards. So you got 24 hours * 10 cards * 3500 tradings = 840000 Tradings to be taxed. So, if they collect one cent each time (and that’s exactly, what Valve’s doing), they get 8400 Euro each day just from these ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ Holiday-Cards. And now remember, how many other items are beeing sold every day (keywords: CS:GO weapon skins, Dota 2, Tradingcards) 😀 These guys really know, how to milk the pig!
If you now remember, that you can get only HALF of the cards and with every badge crafted the amount of cards is beeing reduced (5 to 15 cards are beeing removed and 3 are beeing generated as a boosterpack), the price will increase over time as many people want to craft their badges. And Valve’s fees will increase, too 😉
Yes, foil badges should have more xp. Few people are going to want to buy the cards they need when each one costs half or all of a set of regular cards, and you only get the xp of a set of regular cards. I have a couple of foil badges only because the cards were almost the price of normal cards. That doesn’t happen often.
Everyone should think of Steam levels in general as a meta-game with microtransactions. Don’t start playing that game if you don’t have money to waste. You can do it so you gain some money or stay even, but you have to treat it like a mini stock market with capital to spare. Urgh.

Pretty much, but I got things worked out.
Buy an anime game with booster packs. Craft the booster packs(cause face it If my Heart had wings each card costs about one sack of gems, which is enough to craft a pack 3 or 1 your choice). Sell those cards and make a profit.

The market is capable of allowing both to exist, though, which brings us back to the question of why there is such a weak reward to achieving foils as they currently exist. It might be more reasonable if the prices of foils were indeed cheaper, but the rarity that pretty much exists as their current most appealing feature is also a characteristic that prevents them from reaching a more comparable price with normal cards.
Fair enough. I think i’ll just stick to the normal cards from now on, or until something changes otherwise. Even if its just a matter of purchasing the cards for cheap off the market, something about the current set up (to me) makes level 5 badges seem more rewarding and a bigger accomplishment to boast about.

This guide will give you information about how to obtain and craft the 2013 Steam Summer Getaway trading cards.
If you’re unfamiliar with Steam Trading Cards you can get an introduction to them by reading the official Steam documentation or by viewing my Understand Steam Trading Cards guide below.
Steam Summer Getaway trading cards can be obtained several ways. If you have crafted a game badge recently, you may have received a Mysterious Trading Card instead of a coupon. That trading card will now be a random card from the Steam Summer Getaway deck.
Additional Summer Getaway cards can be obtained the following ways:
You’re also able to participate in the community choice vote from your mobile device’s web browser or by using the Steam Mobile app.
For information on the drop system and how to craft badges from regular Steam Trading Cards read the official FAQ or view my guide.
Once you’ve collected every card in the Steam Summer Getaway deck, you can then craft them into a badge to display on your Steam Profile. Crafting the Steam Summer Getaway badge will also earn you exclusive emoticons and backgrounds only available from the Summer Sale cards. It will also earn you additional experience towards your Steam Level.
This page will display your progress towards the badge. The cards which are darkened are ones you have yet to obtain, and the ones which are lit up are ones you currently posses.
If you’ve been making purchases during the Summer Sale you can view your status towards your next card by clicking on the How Do I Earn More Card Drops? link at the top right of the page. Clicking this will bring up a progress bar letting you know how much more you need to spend on the Steam Store before you’ll receive another Steam Summer Getaway trading card.
If you scroll down to the bottom of this page you’ll be able to see which of your friends have completed the deck and who on your friends list currently owns each card. You’ll be able to send your friends a message straight from this page if they have a card you need in case they want to trade.
Once you’ve collected every card in the deck the Craft Badge button will light up. Crafting the badge will consume the cards you collected.
You’ll then get a popup window which will show all of the cards swirling around, In the center you’ll see some text which says ‘Crafting.’
Once the crafting is complete it will display the results of your craft. The items you’ve earned will be placed into your Steam Community Inventory.
You’re able to craft the Summer Getaway badge five times. Each level will give your badge a different look and you’ll receive additional rewards and experience each time you craft it.
