Carabao Cup 2020-21 format
All 92 clubs competing in the Premier League and the English Football League entered the 2020-21 Carabao Cup, with participation distributed across the divisions.
The competition was played over seven rounds, with single-leg ties throughout. The previous two-legged tie for the semi-final was scrapped in favour of one.
In round one, the draw was split into northern and southern clubs with 22 Championship sides and all League One and League Two clubs entering.

Manchester City were the winners of the 2021 Carabao Cup final, defeating Tottenham 1-0 at Wembley.

Carabao Cup 2020-21 semi-finals
The Carabao Cup 2020-21 semi-finals were played on January 4 and 5, 2021, with the ties contested over one leg rather than two to help with fixture congestion.
Tottenham booked their place in the final after seeing off Championship side Brentford with a 2-0 win in north London.
They were joined in the final by defending champions Manchester City, who overcame Manchester United at Old Trafford in a huge derby encounter.

Carabao Cup 2020-21 quarter-finals
The quarter-final ties were played the week starting December 21.
Manchester City compounded Mikel Arteta’s woes by inflicting a 4-1 defeat on Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium, closing off a potential avenue for redemption for the Gunners boss.
They were to be joined in the final four by local rivals Manchester United, who scored two late goals to see of Everton.
Championship promotion contenders Brentford sprung a surprise by beating Newcastle United.
Tottenham also faced Championship opposition in the form of Stoke City, beating them 3-1 at the bet365 Stadium.

Carabao Cup 2020-21 fourth round
The fourth round ties were played the week commencing September 28.
Tottenham advanced to the quarter-finals over Chelsea through penalty shootout, while Liverpool were outdone by Arsenal in the same manner.
Man Utd beat Brighton 3-0 to progress, while Man City registered victory against Burnley by the same scoreline.

Seventy clubs participated in the first round, with 24 teams from League Two (tier four), 24 from League One (tier three), and 22 from the Championship (tier two).
The draw was divided between ‘northern’ and ‘southern’ sections. Teams were drawn against a team from the same section.

Carabao Cup 2020-21 on TV
In the United Kingdom, the Carabao Cup will be broadcast and live-streamed on Sky Sports.
In the United States, the competition will be shown on ESPN channels.
Carabao Cup 2020-21 rules
This was introduced in order to limit issues of «additional fatigue», as Carabao Cup fixtures typically take place in the middle of the week.
The ABBA penalty system trial was also eliminated, with the format for penalty shoot-outs now reverting to the standard ABAB penalty-taker order.
Seeding has also been removed from the first two rounds.
Video assistant refereeing (VAR) will continue to be in use in fixtures played at Premier League grounds.
Additionally, this will mark the first instance in which the winner will also qualify for the play-offs of the brand-new Europa Conference League, instead of the second qualifying round of the Europa League.
All ties will be played as single legs.
Will away goals count in the Carabao Cup semi-finals?
Previously, the away-goal rule was used in the semi-final stage in the same manner as it is in the Champions League knockout rounds. If, for instance, the away team scored a goal in the first leg that ended in a 1-1 draw, with the second leg ending 0-0, then that team would have progressed to the final courtesy of the away-goals rule.
Now, no such rule will be considered and second-leg stalemates will be decided ultimately by a penalty shoot-out.
Why is the League Cup called the Carabao Cup?
Until 2016, the tournament was named the English Football League Cup (EFL Cup) instead of the League Cup, following the rebranding of the Football League to the English Football League.
Officially, the EFL Cup is known as the Carabao Cup due to the energy drink being the tournament’s official sponsors.
Prior to Carabao’s sponsorship of the tournament starting from 2017, the competition was called the EFL Cup (2016-17), the Capital One Cup (2012-13 to 2015-16), the Carling Cup (sponsored by Molson Coors from 2003-04 to 2011-12), the Worthington Cup (sponsored by Worthington’s from 1998-99 to 2002-03), and the Coca-Cola Cup (from 1992-93 to 1997-98).
Carabao & League Cup past winners
Liverpool have won the Carabao Cup the most times, winning their eighth in 2012 when they defeated Cardiff City on penalties.
Behind them are Man City, who lifted their seventh Carabao Cup in 2020 when they beat Aston Villa through penalty shootout. Manchester United, Aston Villa and Chelsea have all won the Carabao Cup five times each.
Tottenham and Nottingham Forest have both won the competition four times apiece.

Как и Кубок Англии, данный турнир проводится по принципу выбывания участников после первого поражения, за исключением полуфиналов, в которых проводятся два матча на полях обоих соперников. Кроме того, в отличие от Кубка Англии, где в сезоне 2018/19 участвовали 736 команд, число участников Кубка Английской футбольной лиги ограничено 92 клубами: 20 представляют Премьер-лигу, а ещё 72 — три дивизиона Английской футбольной лиги.
Победитель Кубка Английской футбольной лиги получает право участвовать в розыгрыше Лиги Европы, если он не добился этого права другим путём (если победитель сыграет в Лиге чемпионов, путёвка в Лигу Европы переходит команде из числа тех, кто ещё не участвует ни в одном из еврокубков, но финишировала в Премьер-лиге выше своих конкурентов).

Зачем существует этот турнир? Говорят, что английский футбол чтит традиции. Но какие тут сантименты, если турнир основали в 1960 году в противовес еврокубкам? Это Кубок Англии играют с 1871 года, по британским футбольным меркам Кубок Лиги – не древний, а молодой.
С 1981 года это на сто процентов коммерческий турнир. Назывался «Молочным кубком» по имени спонсора. Затем подключились букмекеры, потом – торговцы электротоварами, позже – газировка. По очереди две пивные компании и банк. Сейчас турнир именуют Кубок Карабао, в честь тайской компании энергетических напитков.
Неужели нужно гонять 92 клуба каждый год – в Кубке Лиги играют представители четырех главных английских дивизионов, чтобы раз в семь лет валлийцы смогли сыграть в группе Лиги Европы? Тем более, победа середняка — редчайшее исключение. Рекордсмен по победам в Кубке Лиги – «Ливерпуль», 8 успехов, хотя с 2012-го не выигрывали. МС имеет 6 трофеев и сегодня сыграет очередной финал, у МЮ – 5 побед.
Получается, английский футбол эксплуатирует имена – за двадцать лет неожиданных победителей было всего четверо, остальные Кубки Лиги забрали гранды, но при этом уничтожает шансы английских команд в Европе. Конечно же, «Ливерпуль», «Лестер» и МЮ были в четвертьфинале, как и «Манчестер Сити». Но Клопп использовал молодежь – проиграли 5:0, а команда Сульшера вылетела от соседей в полуфинале.
С учетом, что на предпоследней стадии еще и два матча, то для грандов получается шесть дополнительных игр, если выходят в финал. Конечно, Гвардиола не откажется от победы сегодня. Да и «Астон Вилла» и близко не фаворит – особенно после того, как «Манчестер Сити» отыгрался в Мадриде и снова могут верить в свою крутость. Однако в Кубке Лиги возможны травмы, в Кубке Лиги футболисты фаворитов устают, у Кубка Лиги нет смысла.
Если «Астон Вилла» выиграет сегодня – получится маленькая сенсация, а толку? Кубок Лиги это как переигровки в Кубке Англии – анахронизм, пора отменять. В 19 веке, когда турнир стартовал, британский мужчина мог избить жену, если йоркширский пудинг пересолен, и ему ничего за это не было, если использовал палку тоньше большого пальца. В 21 веке предлагаем следовать всем древним традициям?
Переигровки были, когда не было ни овертаймов, ни пенальти. Кубок Лиги, как и переигровки в Кубке Англии, потерял всяческий практический футбольный смысл. Это турнир для запасных игроков «Манчестер Сити». Выиграют – ничего особенного, заурядный трофей. Второстепенный кубок, как правильно отмечал Моуриньо. А победа «Астон Виллы» невозможна без провала фаворита, то есть снова все замыкается на вечном победителе последних лет.
«Мидлсбро» в 2004 году тоже играл в высшем дивизионе. Причем в финал Лиги Европы попали не благодаря победе в Кубке Лиги, а через два года, так что поражение 0:4 от «Севильи» не связано с трофеем. Кубок Английской футбольной лиги в четырех из последних пяти случаев сводил вместе команды уровня финалов ЛЕ или ЛЧ – все участники имеют такой опыт, а именно два клуба из Манчестера, «Ливерпуль», «шпоры», «канониры» и «Челси».
Вот и получается, что каждый год гоняют фаворитов лишний раз. Лишь раз в несколько лет в финал проскакивают такие ребята, как «Саутгемптон» или «Астон Вилла». Если уж так хочется поддержать скромные клубы, то почему бы не изменить регламент турнира? Например, пусть фавориты включаются позже, если Кубок Лиги аутсайдеры считают таким важным, что умудрились выиграть два финала из последних четырнадцати.
Турнир стал бессмысленным и скучным, ведь не сформировано правильное отношение. Даже национальные кубки переживают не лучшие времена – участникам еврокубков часто на них плевать, поскольку футболисты не могут быть в двух местах одновременно, или играть без отдыха. А тут какой-то Кубок английской Лиги. Или реформировать, или закрыть, ведь остаточный интерес к трофею остался только у «Манчестер Сити».
Турнир создали, чтобы показать – английские внутренние соревнования важнее, чем еврокубки. Через пятьдесят лет нет сомнений, что Лига чемпионов для Гвардиолы в миллион раз важнее, чем Кубок Лиги. Турнир себя исчерпал, его нужно или реорганизовать, или закрыть.
