Create a Shortcut From the Desktop

First, you must know the file or program path or be able to navigate to it. Second, you must have permission to access the file or program. There are multiple ways to create shortcuts. Below are the steps to create a shortcut on your desktop by using the Create Shortcut wizard.
On your desktop screen, right-click any empty space.
In the drop-down menu that appears, select New.
Select Shortcut.
In the Create Shortcut wizard, select Browse to find the file or program that needs a shortcut.
If you already know the path to the file or program, type it and proceed to step five.
Navigate to the file or program you want to create a shortcut for. Select OK.
Select Next.
Type the name you want to assign to the shortcut, then select Finish.
Your new shortcut appears on your desktop. You can use it as you would the other shortcuts.
Create a Desktop Shortcut in File Explorer With a Right-Click
There are three ways to create a desktop shortcut from File Explorer. The first method includes using the right-click context menu. See the next two sections for alternative ways.
From your taskbar, launch File Explorer.
Navigate to the file or program, then select it.
Right-click the name of the file. From the menu that appears, select Send to.
Select Desktop (create shortcut).
Your new shortcut appears on your desktop. You can use it as you would the other shortcuts.
Create a Desktop Shortcut Using the Alt Key
The second way to create a desktop shortcut from the File Explorer is by using the Alt key:
From your taskbar, launch File Explorer.
Locate the program or file.
While pressing the Alt key, left-click and drag the app to your desktop and release.
Create From File Explorer Using Right-Click and Drag
The last way to create a shortcut from File Explorer is by using right-click and dragging to the desktop:

Create a Shortcut From the Start Menu

So in this post, we will see how to create a desktop shortcut in Windows 10/8/7, for your favorite application, program, website, etc, and place it on your Desktop or any other folder, for easy access.
Create Desktop Shortcut in Windows 10
If you instead select Create shortcut, its shortcut will be created in the same location. You can then drag and drop into your desired folder location.
There is another way, and that is by right-clicking on your desktop and then selecting New > Shortcut. You will see the following box open.
You have to enter the path of the program executable file, for which you want to create the shortcut.
As an example, I have taken FixWin, a free tool that helps you fix Windows problems in a click. Once you have selected it, click om OK.
Now click on Next to open the following window. You may keep the same name or modify it.
Clicking on Finish will create a desktop shortcut. But you will notice that it takes the default icon.
To give the shortcut a proper icon, right-click on it and select Properties.
When the Properties box opens, click on the Change icon button.
Select the icon you want and click on Apply. Your shortcut will get the cool icon, you wanted.
Incidentally, if you wish to, you can always cut-paste and move this shortcut and place it in any other folder of your choice.

How To Create Desktop Shortcut For Settings In Windows 10

The Settings app in Windows 10 is the feature of the classic Control Panel we all are familiar with. Microsoft intends to discontinue the Control Panel once all settings have been moved to the new Settings app, and this is the reason why Microsoft moved many settings and options from the classic Control Panel to the new Settings app in Windows 10.
The Settings is definitely an improvement over the Control Panel as the design is clear, and settings are nicely laid out. Most of the settings are easily accessible; especially the new Settings app is a breeze to use on touch devices.
There are many ways to launch the Setting app in Windows 10. The easiest way is to use Windows + I hotkey. That said, some PC users might want to have a shortcut for the Settings app on the desktop for quick access.
Windows 10 doesn’t offer an easy way to create a shortcut of the Settings app on the desktop. When you right-click on the Settings icon on the Start menu, you get only Pin to Start and Pin to taskbar options.

To create a desktop shortcut for the Settings app
Step 1: In the Start/taskbar search field, type Settings to see the Settings app in the search results.
Step 2: Right-click on the Settings app icon and then click the Pin to Start option to pin it to the Start. The newly pinned Settings will appear at the bottom of the Start.
Step 2: Drag and drop the Settings tile from the Start menu to the desktop to create the Settings shortcut on the desktop. After creating the shortcut on the desktop, you may unpin the Settings from the Start that you earlier added.

Create Settings app shortcut on Windows 10 desktop
Step 1: Right-click on the desktop, click New, and then click Shortcut to open Create Shortcut wizard.
Step 2: In the Type the location of the item box, type, or paste the following path:
Click the Next button.
Step 3: Finally, in the Type a name for this shortcut field, type Settings App, or just Settings and then click the Finish button to exit the wizard and create the shortcut.
You should now have a shortcut for the Settings app on your Windows 10 desktop. Clicking on the newly created shortcut will open the Settings app.
To change the icon
Since the newly created shortcut doesn’t display a fancy icon, you might want to use a better icon or exact icon of the Settings app. To change its icon, follow the next three steps.
Step 1: Right-click on the newly created Settings app shortcut and click the Properties option to open its properties.
Step 2: Here, under the Web Document tab, you will see the Change Icon button. Click on the same to choose one of the icons that ship with Windows 10, click OK and then click Apply.
If you want to use an icon that you have downloaded from the internet, please click the Browse button, browse to the icon file, select the icon file, and then click the Open button.
