Алкоголь был известен человечеству с древнейших времен. Не удивительно, что с рождением философии и поэзии люди стали пытаться осмыслить его влияние на человеческий ум. И теперь мы знаем множество пословиц и поговорок на латыни о выпивке. Их можно выучить и блеснуть эрудицией перед друзьями, например, в ходе распития бутылочки-другой вина.
1. In vino veritas
[ин вино вэритас, ин аква санитас]
Перевод: Истина в вине
Пожалуй, наиболее известная латинская пословица. Самое раннее ее упоминание зафиксировано у греческого поэта, творившего еще в VI веке до нашей эры. Это может показаться смешным, но его звали Алкей. Естественно, у него она написана была по-гречески.
Первое же упоминание этой пословицы на латыни приписывается римскому писателю Плинию Старшему в I веке нашей эры. В одном из своих произведений он писал: «Vulgoque veritas jam attributa vino est», что переводится как «Общепринято вину приписывать правдивость». Впоследствии фраза устоялась как «In vino veritas».
Означает эта фраза то, что алкоголь заставляет людей много откровенничать. Русский аналог этой пословицы – «Что у трезвого на уме, то у пьяного на языке».
Есть, кстати, более полный вариант: «In vino veritas, in aqua sanitas». Перевод: «Истина – в вине, здоровье – в воде».
Есть также схожая по смыслу крылатая фраза за авторством римского поэта Горация: «Fecundi calices quem non fecere disertum?» Перевод: «Полные кубки кого не делали красноречивым?»
Тоже схожая фраза: «Vinum locutum est» [винум лёкутум эст] (Говорило вино).
И еще: «Qui in animo sobrii, id est in lingua ebrii» (Что в душе у трезвого, то на языке у пьяного).

Первое упоминание этой пословицы датируется I веком до нашей эры. Хотя фраза, судя по всему, гораздо древнее. Если верить римскому поэту Цицерону, так звучало главное правило застолья у греков. Сам поэт употребил эту фразу как аналог правила жизни вообще в разговоре о добровольном уходе из жизни.
Наиболее близким по значению русским аналогом этой пословицы будет, пожалуй: «Не умеешь – не берись».
3. Amicitia inter pocula contracta plerumque vitrea est

Перевод: Дружба после бокала – стеклянная
Имеется в виду, что дружба, которая установилась в процессе распития вина, так же хрупка, как чаши, из которых пьют новоиспеченные «друзья».
4. Ebrietas certe parit insaniam [эбри;этас эст волюнта;риа инса;ниа].
Перевод: Пьянство определенно порождает безумие.
Трудно определить происхождение этой пословицы. Возможно, это форма другой крылатой фразы, которая считается переводом на латынь изречения греческого философа Аристотеля «Ebrietas est voluntaria insania» (Опьянение есть добровольное безумие).

Перевод: Пьянство — столица всех пороков.
6. Ebrii ebrios gignunt
Перевод: Пьяные рождают пьяных.
Приписывается древнегреческому философу-моралисту Плутарху. Русские аналоги: «Яблоко от яблони недалеко падает» и «Паршивая овца всё стадо портит».

Бахус – древнеримский бог виноделия. Во времена Античности разбавленное вино считалось полезным. Его пили вместо воды во время еды, и порой даже использовали как лекарство. Но чистое вино, не разбавленное водой, считалось вредным. Пить такое вино считалось злоупотреблением. То есть Abusus in Baccho – это банальное пьянство. Просто звучит более поэтично.

Эта фраза встречается в комедии «Евнух» древнеримского драматурга Теренция, жившего во II веке до нашей эры. Церера – древнеримская богиня плодородия. Либер – бог виноградарства, известный также под именами Вакх и Бахус. Венера – богиня любви.
Смысл пословицы: без вина и закуски и любовь не в радость.
Много позже эту фразу переиначил английский поэт Джордж Гордон Байрон в поэме «Дон Жуан»:
